Fox 2000 spins 'Carousel' remake
Fox 2000 is looking to remake the Rodgers and Hammerstein's Musical Carousel as a starring vehicle for Hugh Jackman, who'll also produce with Seed Productions Partner, John Palermo. The original 1956 musical film starred Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones and was released by Fox. Currently, a deal is being negotiated with the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization for the rights to use the music and lyrics the duo wrote for the 1945 stage musical. Jackman is well acquainted with the role of Billy Bigelow, (who he'll play in this feature) as he had sung Billy in the 2002 Carnegie Hall Concert to honor Rodgers & Hammerstein. Carousel was last revived on Broadway in 1994. This feature will be about Billy Bigelow, a carnival barker who's temper puts him in the middle of a botched robbery and leads to his death. With him being stuck in purgatory, he's given one day to return and fix the problems he left behind. Namely a teenager who has alot of his rebellious traits. Jackman does have a deal with Disney to develop musicals, but Fox has the rights to Carousel and Seed Productions does have an overall first-look deal with Fox. Wolverine is still in development with David Benioff scripting and which Jackman will also be starring in. Currently, Jackman and Palermo are in Sydney setting up an office at Sydney's Fox's Studio to produce Fox-financed productions in Australia. Hugh will also start his Boy From Oz tour on Thursday. Hugh is currently on screen in Woody Allen's Scoop, and then with Chris Nolan's The Prestige which will be released in October and then in Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain in November. His next project will be the independant drama being produced by Seed Production The Tourist and then he's set to star with Nicole Kidman next year on Baz Luhrmann's currently untitled Fox Musical. Jackman to star in Carousel musical
Hugh Jackman has been talking about producing and his new upcoming projects, but he's most interesting in talking about his upcoming project Carousel. Coming Soon said this about the remake of the musical.
Jackman would play Billy Bigelow (a role he sung in a 2002 Carnegie Hall concert to honor Rodgers & Hammerstein), a carnival barker whose temper puts him in the middle of a botched robbery and leads to his death. Stuck in purgatory, he's given one day to return and fix the problems he left behind -- namely a teenager who has a lot of his rebellious traits.
Filmstalker also had to say this about Hugh's upcoming project, that is sounds interesting and is another change in direction for Jackman. Does it mean he'll be singing on film? or will it be a non-musical remake? Gotta admire Jackman, he's continually changing direction in his projects and picks weighty ones and never takes an easy shot these days. Thanks Film Stalker
